Lookup: HertzHarmonic DistortionNonlinear distortion, which generates additional harmonics (i.e. frequency multiples) of the original signal. These harmonics, particularly the odd ones (3x, 5x, 7x, etc.), may clash harmonically with portions of the signal itself, causing a harsh, objectionable sound quality.
HeadroomThe difference between nominal operating level and peak clipping in an audio system. A mixer with a nominal operating level of +5 dBu and a maximum output level of +23 dBu has 18 dB of headroom.
HertzA unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second. Named after Heinrich Rudolf Hertz. Abbr.: Hz. Formerly known as CPS (cycles per second).
High Pass FilterA filter that attenuates frequencies below a certain cutoff point, while passing on frequencies above the cutoff unaffected. Low Cut Filter is another name for this type of filter.
HouseThe systems responsible for the primary sound reinforcement in a given hall, building, or arena. Hence we have the house mixer or house engineer, the house mix, the house amps, the main house speakers and so on.
